Environment & Lead-free Soldering

The European Union is driving electronics manufacturers to reduce the environmental impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Through directive 2002/95/EC the EU is implementing a Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical equipment. Mountain Optech is currently planning to be in full compliance with the EU directives in concert with our OEM suppliers, mainly in the area of Lead-free Soldering. Disc drive suppliers such as Seagate and Toshiba already have plans in place to reduce and eliminate lead from their solders:

Mountain Optech is evaluating the best solution for phasing out all lead-based solders prior to the 2010 expiration of the exception granted to the use of lead solders for servers, storage, and storage array systems (2002/95/EC Annex paragraph 7). Mountain Optech will flow down these requirements to all suppliers.
